Taking the “Buzz” Out of Words
"Ohmygod, is that what I'm supposed to do? Is this what people expect me to teach?" "I am SO mundane!" This is a reaction I had just last week after reading a workshop description that went something like this: "Learn to raise the prana of the hara to awaken and open the heart chakra to it's fullest potential!". Yikes! After 18 years of yoga, I still wonder, am I deep and esoteric enough to teach?
My goal as a teacher is to communicate, whether it pertains to a pose well-executed or a philosophical idea that conveys meaning and insight, perhaps ...

Sunrise, Sunset, Downward Dog: Yoga at the Beach
The chance to take a yoga class on the beach is a wonderful opportunity. Whether someone is a novice or expert practitioner, the environment lends new feeling to the yoga experience. Many people hear of the physical and emotional benefits of yoga, but never get around to trying it for themselves. Doing so while on a beach vacation may be the best possible time!

SoHolistic: New York Open Center
My earliest recollection of the New York Open Center dates back to a balmy Saturday evening in 1985. My friend Sylvia, a fellow European expatriate with a penchant for all things holistic, suggested we attend a "barefoot boogie" dance jam at a recently opened spot on Spring Street, in the heart of Manhattan's artistic enclave of SoHo. I distinctly remember climbing the stairs to the top floor, and negotiating a pile of shoes before entering a room filled with bodies in motion. Over the years I would return to that building on many an occasion, drawn to its ... [more]

Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Yoga School
I looked around at the motley crew. Would an outsider be able to guess our common endeavor? We were seventeen women, three men, in our twenties through fifties, of sundry backgrounds and occupations. The sari-wrapped Ayurvedic healer, the talkative schoolteacher, the timid social worker, the surfer-girl musician, the French dancer, the recovering investment banker who didn't seem to blink much, a couple writers, a smattering of us strategically unemployed. Bodies short and tall, generously rounded, wiry, muscular, soft and bendy. All of us assembled on the ... [more]

How to Find a Yoga Guru: Good Karma and Good Research
Before chanting
"Om", you may find yourself asking "Hmmm?"
while searching for a yoga teacher. Like all teachers,
yoga instructors impart knowledge, inspire and challenge;
but what is most unique about yoga is the deep relationship
between instructor and student: the teacher becomes
a guide for the student's practice of yoga postures,
and most importantly, the student's ...

Pilates in Chicago: Not Your Father's Cadillac
Upon entering the Pilates studio at Body Endeavors one can be forgiven for mistaking it for a torture chamber designed by Ikea. The leather straps, steel springs, myriad harnesses and loops, and ominously named equipment like "Reformer" and "Spine Corrector" might give one pause before enrolling in a class. But don't be intimidated! Pilates is, in fact, a gentle, if energetic method of exercise.
Developed by Joseph H. Pilates, the training regimen has evolved over the last eighty years from its origins during World War I. Pilates, a German living in ...
